SHIKUMA LAB

San Diego State University | Department of Biology
SEEKING POSTDOC TO STUDY MOLECULAR SYRINGES

Position Description. The Shikuma Lab is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to train in the lab of Dr. Nicholas Shikuma under a NIH R35 MIRA and NSF CAREER-funded project at the San Diego State University in San Diego, California.

The successful candidate will lead a project studying a novel molecular syringe structure produced by Bacteroides bacteria from the human gut. This previously undescribed family of syringe-like structures called Bacteroidales Injection Systems are produced by the gut microbiomes of nearly all healthy adult humans. A publication forming the basis of this project can be accessed through the following link (Rojas et al. 2020).

The ideal candidate is an ambitious, motivated, detail-oriented individual with experience with genetics, molecular biology and tissue culture, has exceptional oral and written communication skills, and nearing completion or recently obtained their PhD. Experience in microbial genetics and/or host-microbe interactions is desired. The candidate should be able to work collegially within our research team and engage with the vibrant microbiology community at SDSU and in San Diego. Within the first year, the candidate is expected to develop and submit applications for independent fellowship funding.

The Shikuma Lab is a highly collaborative environment composed of talented scientists studying host-microbe interactions in the ocean and the human microbiome (currently 3 postdocs, 3 PhD students, 2 MS students, 4 undergrads and the PI). More information about the lab can be found through the lab’s website. https://shikumalab.com
